Asa Omlid update: its a long one.... Physical therapy: they are working on standing. They still do exercises on the bicycle etc to keep movement in his legs and help build strength. The issue they are having is with the tone on his left side. Even after they stretch him out he can not put his left foot down flat. We are still hoping to get back on track to get the Baclufin pump which will help once the Medicaid/social security issue is fixed. Occupational Therapy: putting him on a nursing care program. The nurses will continue to work with him and not so much the therapists. He can feed himself, brush his teeth, wash his face. Has good range of motion in his left shoulder. He can straighten his arm by himself even though once again tone is an issue. The biggest issue is his left hand. He cannot grip. He can sit on the edge if the bed for 15 minutes. 6 months ago it was 2 minutes. They are using a standing tree to help transfer him from bed to chair and toilet. Speech: significant improvement. Considering 6 months ago he could hardly talk. He still has some issues with some words. Breathing is an issue. Also air coming out of his nose is a factor. He is learning tools to help with that and eventually the brain will catch on. They are also working on memory. On average he can remember 5-6 items after a couple minutes. Normal range is 7. Vision: peripheral vision has improved. Still have reversed tunnel vision. eye doctor did say it would take up to a year. Diet: the boy can eat! He still gets some supplements in the form of shakes but for the most part he can eat regular food. He had lost weight but is now starting to gain again. From working hard no doubt . They are also serving him larger portions for breakfast and dinner. Social: even though Asa is the youngest resident there, he is actively participating in social activities. By the way...he loves company. Hint hint! The last 6 months have been a bumpy ride and it is far from over. Im so happy to find a place that cares about how he is doing. He is well loved there. I am so proud of him for working so hard. One thing they all said was he is no quitter....no he isnt. They also say he does not complain either. He is content. He is my son! And Im grateful for all your continued prayers. Miracles do happen...might not be over night and might take work...they do happen! And Asa is one!
