Asato- Anko (Okinanwan name Anko is pronounced Yatsutsune) was born in 1827 and was a member of the Tunchi class who were the local authorities in the village of Asato which was half way between Shuri and Naha. Because of his aristocratic upbringing, he learned not only the chinese classics but was considered a scholar and was skilled at Tote, horseback riding, Jigen Ryu style of the sword and Kyu-jitsu (archery). Anko Asato and Anko Itosu studied and trained together under Bushi Matsumora. Legend has it that Asato and Itosu once defeated between 20 and 30 attackers. Asato also defeated the swordsman Yorin-Kanna using only Tote against a live katana. Asato-Anko was the first instructor of Funakoshi-Gichin, who took Tote Jitsu to Japan, changed the name to Karate and instructed many of the founders of Tae Kwon Do. Master Anko Asato died in 1906
