Asa’s problem was not that he trusted physicians, but that he only trusted physicians. All healing ultimately comes from God, yet we can become bitter in our pain and make an idol of the many ways that God displays his healing power. This hinders our ability to see through the physician or counselor to the Great Healer, and can hinder our ability to process our sickness with a heavenly perspective. In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the Lord, but only from the physicians.2 Chronicles 16:12 (NIV)
