Ash Wednesday occurs this year on March 5th. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the church season of Lent. Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, right before Easter Sunday. Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts and then became a time for penance by all Christians. This year we will be holding a short devotional service on Ash Wednesday at FUMC Walton at 6:00 pm and at Colchester Community UMC at 7:30 pm. The service will include the imposition of ashes for those who desire it.
