Asha Gunawardena is doing her PhD at the School of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Western Australia. Her research looks at the best ways to control water pollution of Kelani River in her home country of Sri Lanka. This river is the main source of drinking water supply to the capital city, Colombo. “My Ph. D research is particularly interesting as it is multidisciplinary where we combine science engineering and economics to find the trade-off between social welfare and environmental sustainability. In this way, my study helps to provide evidence-based policy choices that maximize social welfare to enhance informed public policy decisions.” All week were featuring PhD candidates from around the region as a part of our National Science Week celebration.
