Ashes series – Old Trafford – 04/08/2013 day four. With the prospect of an exciting day ahead, the Vicar, and Colonel Blimph, decide to go straight to their Old Trafford friend’s box, instead of attending morning service. Cooler and cloudier, with rain forecast later, will not prevent a good all-round exciting test match. Broad and Prior, knock off the 34 runs to avoid the follow on in 25 minutes, and at 338 Broad feathers one from Lyon, caught by Haddin, for a brisk 32, in the 129th over, for the 8th wicket. Swann, joins Matty, and soon the 350 comes up with a six, by the former. On 11, Swann gets an inside edge off a good ball from Siddle, for another Haddin catch, his 5th in the innings. 353 – 9, in the 132rd over. England’s innings closes when Prior, lifts a high one of the edge off the edge of his bat, off Siddle, caught Warner, for 30, all-out for 368, 159 behind the Australian first innings total. The pitch is heavy rolled again, as at the start of play, for the Aussies. Their second innings start with the promoted pantomime villain Warner, who opens with Rogers. In the 6th over Rogers departs for 12, bowled by Broad with a poor shot, 23 – 1. One run later lunch is taken. In the 10th over, Warner’s lucky to survive a DRS, where “snicko” showed a small spot, but he survived. 50 up in the 14th, 50 partnership in the 18th over, when Warmer, hooks Bresnan to deep mid-wicket where Joe Root, takes a very good diving catch, for 41. 74 – 2. The score tick along entertainingly at 4.5 runs per over, but on 99, Swann, bowls Khawaja, around his legs superbly, for 24. The ball of the series, in the 23 over. Watson, out next when he skies Bresnan, to third man, and KP’s there to hold the chance, gone for 18. 103 – 4. Smith joins his skipper. WHERE’S THE RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smith is run out, for 19, in the 30th over, when Clarke, takes a lazy run, for a certain two and poor Steve, is stranded, 133 – 5. At 137 – 5, the covers are on, tea is taken, at 1530, restarts 20 minutes later, after a short shower. Australia pile on the lead at five an over, but loses their 6th wicket when Haddin, skies one to long on for a brisk 28, caught Broad, bowled Anderson, 152 – 6. the lead now extended to 311. With a dismal forecast for fifth day WHY HASN’T CLARKE DECLARED!!!!!!! For the second time Alastair, uses his two reviews!! Starc, in and out when he hit up to wide mid off, where Swann takes a simple catch off Anderson’s bowling, in the 36th, for 11. OFF FOR BAD LIGHT!!!!! Australia 172 – 7, with a lead of 331. End of play for day four. Clarke is not happy, gives Marias a bit of lip, hope the match referee notices? SUGGEST YOU READ THE LAWS COBBER!!! With a early end to the day the Vicar, and Colonel Blimph, have time to attend an evening service locally. Afterwards back to the Glitzy Ritz, for the day’s review, and discuss, the “bugbear of the day” which is players leaving the field, for petty reasons, something that needs addressing. Mrs Armchair knows who are the worst culprits. Our Sir Geoffrey, has something to say about that as well. A view from the Armchair.
