Ashwini Akkunji, Jithin Paul in final; shocking exit for defending champion Joseph Abraham! Joseph Abraham can count himself extremely unlucky, as he failed to qualify for the final despite clocking the 7th fastest time in the heats and over 0.70 clear of his Indian rival, who made it through by virtue of finishing 2nd in his heat. The top two from 3 heats and two fastest losers qualify for the final. Joseph Abraham, who ran third leg in India’s 4×400 relay on Monday, was impressive as he clocked 51.04 to finish third in Heat 1 of the Men’s 400m Hurdles at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium. Chen Chieh of Taipei won the heat in 50.11 ahead of Ali Khamis of Bahrain who was tenth of a second behind. Jithin Paul had the luck on his side as he was drawn in heat 2, the slowest of the three heats and he duly qualified by finishing 2nd in 51.76. Jithin Paul goes into the Wednesday’s final as the slowest qualifier, nearly 2 seconds behind Cheng Wen of China. Cheng Wen of China was the only athlete to dip under 50 seconds and won heat 3 edging out Eric Shauwn Cray of Philippines, who set a new PB of 50.00 to be the second fastest qualifier. Ashwini Akkunji had no problem getting through to Women’s 400m Hurdles final, finishing 2nd in Heat 1 as she attempt to defend the title she won in 2010. In a short field of 9, only 1 was about to miss out and all 5 from Akkunji’s heat made it through to the final. Ashwini ran 57.67 to finish a distant second behind Oluwakemi Mujidat Adekoya of Bahrain, who set a new games record of 55.09 and goes into the final as the overwhelming favourite. Akkunji is the second fastest qualifier, well clear of Xiao Xia of China and Satomi Kubokura of Japan. Post your messages.
