Asian Families in America [SOCW 397/AAS 397] - class enrollement still open Asian Families in America [SOCW 397/AAS 397] Although it is the second week of the semester it is not too late to register for this class!! All students that join will be caught up in no time to course content. This course examines how families from major ethnic Asian-American groups compare to families in their country of origin and compare with the “typical American” family. Course content includes a historical context of Asian-American families, immigration patterns and trends, understanding families as a system, identity formation and retention and bi-cultural identity. This course follows a lecture and discussion format and encourages interactive conversations on such topics as: • The myth of the model minority • Asian-Americans seeking mental health services and the concept of shame on the family • Intermarriage and multiracial identification • Media and Asian Americans • Citizenship and interracial politics Note: This is a 300 level course that is open to all students – course assignments and expectations are such that freshman standing students will be able to succeed.
