Asian Film Academy 2014 Selects Its 24 Participants Asian Film Academy (AFA), a global filmmaking education program for the future of Asian cinema, has announced the 24 participants for 2014. Launched in 2005, this year’s number of applicants for AFA has increased by more than 52%. This year’s applicants included those who have been invited to renowned film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival, and heightened the intensity of the competition. Also, the growth in the Chinese film industry has led to an increased number of applicants from China. The number of female applicants has grown each year and the figure now represents 1/3 of the total applications in 2014. As a result, 7 female fellows will be joining AFA 2014. Many young filmmakers from Bangladesh continue to apply, perhaps influenced by the selection of Bangladesh’s Television (2012) as the closing film for the 17th Busan International Film Festival. For its 10th year, AFA has increased various forms of support for fellows. Technical assistantship, previously limited to selected AFA alumni, has widened its pool of applicants to include all of AFA alumni. The 7 chosen technical assistants will help out this year’s fellows in filming and post-production during the AFA period. Earlier this year, AFA agreed to partner with 2 leading film institutes, the New York Film Academy and Full Sail University. The New York Film Academy, together with AFA, will provide opportunities for 2 fellows to each participate in 4-Week Hi-Def Filmmaking Workshops, one in New York and one in Beijing. The instructors from Full Sail University will visit Busan and give special lectures for fellows during AFA. Starting this year, AFA is scheduled to further increase support of this nature. The selected 24 future film professionals from all over Asia will take part in AFA 2014 for 18 days. Distinguished Hungarian director Béla TARR will be heading AFA 2014 as the Dean, and Busan Film Commission Director OH Seok-geun will also double as the Deputy Dean. Korean director SONG Il-gon (directing mentor) and Polish cinematography director Ryszard LENCZEWSKI (cinematography mentor) complete AFA 2014 faculty. The 24 fellows will produce 2 short films which will be officially presented in the 19th Busan International Film Festival. Other AFA programs include workshops, a master class, special lecture series and mentoring. Asian Film Academy 2014 will be held for 18 days from September 25 to October 12, 2014. Asian Film Academy (AFA) is a global filmmaking education project hosted by Dongseo University, Busan Film Commission, and the Busan International Film Festival to foster emerging filmmakers and establish an Asian filmmakers’ network. Through this extensive curriculum, AFA equips fellows with a strong foundation to become exceptional filmmakers. For the past 9 years, 217 young filmmakers from 29 countries have graduated from AFA and distinguished themselves.
