Asjad, Asif eye NBP snooker title KARACHI: Asjad Iqbal will defend his title in the fifth edition of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) Ranking Snooker Championship 2013 getting underway here at the NBP Sports Complex in Clifton on Wednesday (tomorrow). The details of the one-week event, carrying a prize purse of Rs 174,000, were unveiled by Alamgir Anwar Shaikh, President, Pakistan Billiards & Snooker Association (PBSA), and Iqbal Qasim, Chief of NBP Sports & CSR Division, in a media briefing here at the Karachi Gymkhana on Monday. It was revealed that the facilities for snooker have been increased at the NBP Sports Complex, which will be hosting a national ranking event for the second year running. It will also be made available for holding training camps for the national squad in the coming months. The NBP, which already employs as many as four cueists, Mohammad Asif, Asjad Iqbal, Mohammad Sajjad and Mohammad Majid Ali, will keep an eye on the promising youngsters in the upcoming event to boost their snooker team. Meanwhile the top 32 cueists of the country, divided equally in eight groups, will be entering the competition which is going to be the second national ranking tournament of the year, following the Nationals held in March. The world champion and the Asian 6-Reds champion, Mohammad Asif, who had finished runner-up in the NBP Ranking Championship last year, will also be contesting the event.The winner of the NBP tourney will be entitled to a purse of Rs 60,000 while the runner-up will be presented a cash award of Rs 35,000. The losing semifinalists will be getting Rs 15,000 each, the losing quarter-finalists will be receiving Rs 5,000 each and the losing pre-quarter-finalists will be compensated with Rs 3,000 each. The highest break of the event carries an award of Rs 5,000. According to the draws, top seeded Hamza Akbar has been placed in the Group A alongwith Mohammad Yousuf, Mohsin Amin and Aamir Shahzad while the Group B comprises of second seed Imran Shahzad, Mohammad Majid Ali, Bahadur Khan and Aakash Rafiq. Third seed Mohammad Sajjad has been drawn in the Group C in the company of Aamir Tariq, Sultan Mohammad and Mohammad Izhar Alvi while the Group D features fourth seed Abdul Sattar, Sharjeel Mahmood, Aamir Rasheed and Vishan Gir. Fifth seed Shahid Aftab features in the Group E with the trio of Mohammad Javed, Naveen Kumar Perwani and Ayaz Khan while the Group F contains sixth seed Babar Masih, Asjad Iqbal, Mohammad Asif and Rambail Gul. The quartet of seventh seed Abu Saim, Umair Alam Khan, Mohammad Bilal and Khurram Hussain Agha make up the Group G while the Group H has the composition of eighth seed Farhan Noor, Mohammad Ishtiaq, Sohail Shahzad and Shafiullah.
