Ask ANNIE! Q: What is your favorite macro subject to photograph - TopicsExpress

Ask ANNIE! Q: What is your favorite macro subject to photograph and how do you focus on the animal? Annie: One of the wildest creatures I have ever found was the purple hairy squat lobster. This creature lives deep in the crevices of pink barrel sponges in the Indo-Pacific realm. Not all pink barrel sponges host these critters, only ones with purple brittle stars and purple shrimp! When shooting, I always consider my positioning in relation to the fragile coral reefs. Once I determine I can shoot without damaging the reef, I hope my subject will cooperate. Not every animal poses for the camera so you have to choose the animal that will cooperate with you. When shooting macro, the focus needs to be on the eye of the subject. Purple Hairy Squat Lobsters live deep within the crevices the purple brittle star makes in the pink barrel sponges. I passed up at least a dozen of these that I found that were not in the right position. This guy was crawling just outside of his hole and I was able to take a few frames before he went back into the crevice. I still believe that the ocean is better than cartoons and this guy is one of my favorites of the deep sea!
