Ask Adonis Tuesdays: Q; Hi, question about the deadlift. Just before the pull do we put our weight and apply pressure from the heel? - Joseph A. A: NO! Dont know why i keep seeing this. You dont apply pressure from the heel. The only possible exception is if you deadlift by taking slack out of the bar before the pull but even then i still dont like the pulling from the heels idea. The force must be applied from the middle of the sole of the foot. Thats where you can apply the most force in the most balanced way so that you can use the quads as well as the posterior chain. When you apply force from the heel more often than not the shins are almost completely vertical which means the quads arent being used as much. This usually results in the ass shooting up too early. Get the chest out, get the chin up and parallel to the ground, push the knees a little forward over the bar and press from the middle of the foot.
