Ask Ashley Koff RD “To egg or not to egg, that’s this week’s #AskAshleyKoffRD ?” Question: Hi, i would like to hear comment from you regarding this article. i got confused by this article.. doess that means we can eat eggs without limit?? businessinsider/nutrition-advice-wrong-2014-3?IR=T& businessinsider/13-nutrition-lies-that-made-the-world-sick-and-fat-2013-10?IR=T&op=1 Answer: I guarantee you are not the only one (who got/gets confused from articles like these)! We live in a nutrition world today that is trying to break free from decades of nutrition (mis)education coming from food product advertising and marketing as opposed to qualified healthcare practitioners. (I know of what I speak, I started my career working at a global ad agency on a global food brand advertising sweet cereals …yes my career today is my mea culpa to you all!). So while we attempt to correct egregious nutrition education errors, there’s bound to be confusion such as yours – to egg or not to egg? First let me set the context for which you should evaluate any nutrition recommendations. Please ask these questions: Who am I? It may sound silly but I’ve had women ask me about health studies related to foods and supplements found to be potentially bad for the prostate (ladies, we don’t got that one). That’s extreme but so can be following nutrition advice intended for another being – yes I had a client once ask me about something her vet told her for her dog! Again, extremes, yes, but when we don’t feel well or worry about cancer, we can act extreme, or at least contemplate it. Does it sound too good to be true? This one is easy. Better nutrition is simple but its not overly simple …as in stupidly sillily (word?) simple. So yes, we may be able to eat eggs but is not eating eggs what made the world sick and fat – well that’s just too simple to be true. Who’s making the “Science” and who’s sharing it? Ok, I know this is two questions but we can be efficient and knock it out in one. Science is unfortunately a tough word these days as financial influence and plain old desire to influence or be seen as an influencer (‘expert’) can be powerful motivators to having certain information put forth as science. All I needed to know about nutrition science I learned working on my first research lab study – where we gave out measured food and asked people to report on how much they ate of it and also if they had anything else. Let’s just say the “data” had some issues. It’s not because participants want to lie or just want their reward, it’s just darn hard to remember what we eat (why I recommend food journaling) as well as to guestimate your consumption (and why I give parameters to do so or ask for clients to send me photos). Ok so can we egg? You could live a full and healthy life and never eat an egg. You could live a full and healthy life and consume quality eggs, within reason (See the AKA nutrition plan AshleyKoffApproved/nutritionplan ). It is not within reason to eat anything without limit. It is not within reason to mono-eat any food (as in choosing it all the time)…even kale. It is not within Better Nutrition, Simplified rules to eat poor quality anything, including eggs. So skip eggs that come from factory farms where the chickens never see the light of day, are given feed that their body doesn’t recognize, are stressed, and perhaps are given hormones to make them make more eggs more often. Essentially, don’t eat the egg of a chicken that isn’t a healthy chicken – and to judge that I would think about the chicken like yourself or a pet – what would make and keep you healthy? Or your pet? Time outside? Food that nourishes your body? Medications only when needed? Yeah that about sums it up.
