Asking for positive thoughts for our Kamik tonight. She is increasingly experiencing the doggie dementia that occurs at bedtime. Some nights are Ok and others like last night make all of us just want to go back to bed in the morning! Between Bob and I last night we were up 6 times with her, and then after her finally going to sleep woke us at 6:00A.M. on a day when we could sleep in! As many of you have experienced with old dogs, the transition to bedtime seems to set off the night time dementia flipping day and night. When we go to bed Kamik goes outside and will sleep outside for the first 2 hours, and routinely comes in our dog door and usually will go up the two stairs she physically can climb and goes back to bed up in our living room. At night she is now going in and out of the dog door multiple times before attempting the steps or cries to wake us. We get up and put a loose lead on her and she walks right up the steps and on good nights will go to bed in living room. Some nights I wake up to check on her and she has come in and quietly gone to bed. But the bad nights she cries and then throws herself back down the steps and goes back outside to start this routine all over again. We have moved her pain meds to bedtime as our vet thinks this may help her. So tonight we changed a lamp near the steps to a low wattage light bulb and will leave this on all night for her. Lets hope the additional light may help her feel more comfortable in coming in and staying in and going back to bed. Or at the very least it will give Bob and I a light that is already on when we get up to help her!
