Assalamu alaikum Dear Noble Parents, 2nd grade We began the Hour of Code event today by learning about graph paper programming with a slightly less challenge than we did in 3rd grade. Students were introduced to the computer programming terms: Program, Programmer, and Algorithm. They programmed one another to draw simple pictures using graph paper to begin to understand how precise programming is. We agreed on symbols using arrows to represent instructions such as : Move one square right, move one square left, move one square up, move one square down, and fill in square with color. We completed an assessment worksheet together where students drew arrows to represent the picture. Then they did the reverse and read the program to draw the picture. We learned that the program can be different as long as the end result is the same. I helped the individual groups because many groups need that extra help. They were able to answer when we were practicing together; but when it came to the hands-on and for them to do it on their own, a few groups needed help. The groups took turns drawing a picture and their partner writing the program for their picture. One student took the role of programmer and the other took the role of ARM (Automated Realization Machine that drew out the program. I went around helping groups until they got the hang of it. 2nd B finished in time to learn how to use the code.org website to practice coding. They got to try in class. A few students got to puzzle 5 and two got to puzzle 7! There are 20 puzzles. 2nd A took too long finishing the hands-on activity, so I just showed them how to use the website and they didnt get to start in class. Sincerely, Sr. Amal Fouad
