Assalamu alaikum beloved brothers and sister in Islam. Today a general question is raised can we be part of the celebration of Christmas. What is Christmas? Christmas is a day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ who they claim to be son of god. As a Muslim, to claim or to be part of or to be supportive in wishing and celebrating the birth of claimed son of god by the Christians is Shirk (associating partners to Allah SWT) which is the worst sin that a person could commit in his life time. Allah SWT says in the Quran 19: 88-91 “And they say, The Most Merciful has taken [for Himself] a son. You have done an atrocious thing. The heavens almost rupture therefrom and the earth splits open and the mountains collapse in devastation. That they attribute to the Most Merciful a son.” Oh dear Muslim brothers and sisters of Islam you could understand from these verses that highest form of blasphemy is to associate partners unto The Maker, Allah SWT. How could one even imagine in committing this sin or celebrating the day in which the grave sin is committed. Further Allah SWT says that gravity of being part of these types of celebrations which directly or indirectly related to Shirk and it goes against the dogma of a Muslim, “And it has already come down to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them. Indeed Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together” Surah 4:140. Allah SWT says in another verse that “O you who have believed, do not violate the rights of Allah or [the sanctity of] the sacred month or [neglect the marking of] the sacrificial animals and garlanding [them] or [violate the safety of] those coming to the Sacred House seeking bounty from their Lord and [His] approval. But when you come out of ihram, then [you may] hunt. And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Haram lead you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.” Surah 5:2. With these dynamic verses, it is crystal clear that we cannot be part and parcel of these celebrations. Many a times we feel, to keep our bond and relationship and coexistent with the people of Christianity that we need to be part of these celebrations. In office, school and home, we join with our colleagues and classmates with the intention of goodwill and bond to convey the word of Allah SWT. Remember, the relationship and good understanding built by disobeying Allah swt or by using Haram methods will not last long or build a healthy friendship. And these methodologies will not convey the goodwill of Islam. To convey Islam or to build the goodwill of Islam, let us use Halal methods which will sustain our objectives in their hearts and minds. May Allah SWT bless us, guide us and show us the path of happiness in this world and in the hereafter.
