Assembly of God Government and procedures: Who is your local church head? God - Pastor - Board Spokesman/Board Hopefully you said in this order. Christ the Head- Ephesians 5:23; Colossians 1:18 Elected Leadership Ephesians 4:11, 12 1 Timothy 3:8-13 The pastor is elected by the local congregation. He leads through preaching and teaching of the Word as well as by example. The pastor is responsible for much of the public ministry and day-to-day operation of the local church. A board of deacons is elected to ASSIST the pastor in spiritual matters and to help conduct the business operation of the church. Sovereignty of Local Assemblies Within the fellowship of the Assemblies of God there are two classifications of churches - General Council affiliated churches and district affiliated churches. General Council affiliated churches enjoy full autonomy, having developed to the point of where they are self-governing and self-supporting. These fundamental principles have been catalysts for growth in the Fellowship. District affiliated churches are those which have not yet developed to the point where they qualify for full autonomy. All assemblies are required to adhere to the Statement of Fundamental Truths and a biblical pattern of conduct. Major decisions should not be made without all pieces in place. Making major decisions should include- 1. Pray without ceasing. 2. Meditate on the Word of God day and night. 3. Gather true information related to the proposal. 4. Think through as many implications of the proposal as possible. 5. Write the proposal including a coherent and orderly presentation of the proposal, an explanation of it, the implications, and the rationale. 6. Give copies of this written proposal to the Leadership sufficiently in advance of the meeting at which it will be considered. 7. Read the proposal to the Leadership or read a coherent summary of its key parts at the meeting when it is to be discussed. 8. Seek a thorough discussion of the proposal, with all the Leadership urged to participate in the discussion. Allow the head of the Leadership group to guide the discussion to appropriate action not steering but simple presenting of all options to be voted upon by members.
