Assembly polls can be held any time: Azad . . Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad, today hinted at early Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and ruled out, though covertly, any pre-poll alliance with present alliance National Conference. Party insiders said that during the day-long convention here today, Congress leaders “in one voice” opposed any move to enter into pre-poll alliance with National Conference as it was felt that Congress has achieved a strong ground in the State and fighting elections alone will add to its seats count in the Assembly. A senior party leader claimed that Azad also shared the view of his party leaders and asked them to be ready for the upcoming elections. “The Assembly elections could be held anytime and there is very little time left. So work hard in a united way and reach out to the people highlighting party’s programmes,” Azad was quoted as asking the party workers. “We are not able to implement our policies and programmes in the State as we are in coalition government. So we have to work hard and make sure that we secure at least 50 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections”, Azad is said to have told the party workers in the meeting. “The party wants to contest all seats and our aim is to make next government on our own”, the party leader claimed further. He further quoted Azad as having said, “Fighting upcoming assembly elections is not going to be easy for the party as it has to face stiff opposition from both the Kashmir-centric parties as well as the BJP”. Indirectly referring to PDP, Azad has expressed concern over the way “Kashmir- centric parties were making inroads in Jammu as well.” “Kashmir-centri c parties do have some influence in Jammu region. The BJP also has a strong footing in Jammu. So workers have to work hard and in a united way to ensure party’s victory”, he told the workers. However, AICC general secretary Ambika Soni said that it was too early to comment on the issue of “pre-poll alliance.” “We have gathered the inputs from our party leaders in Jammu. Similar convention would be held in Kashmir and later in Ladakh. The inputs will be shared with party high command to arrive at a decision”, she told media persons. . . Source:- Greater kashmir
