Assess Your Active Listening Skills September 9th, 2013 Dear Friends, Active listening is a complex and difficult skill that everyone can learn to demonstrate more often and more effectively. Active listening shows your interest in what someone has to say, helps you to gather information, demonstrates empathy towards other’s feelings, and allows you to assimilate new ideas. Most of all, active listening creates trust and engagement. Assess how frequently you demonstrate the following ten skills of active listening: 1. I focus my complete mental attention on the other person. 2. I concentrate on what the other person is saying even if I am not interested. 3. I ask questions to get additional information. 4. I do not interrupt and I let the other person finish. 5. I indicate that I am paying attention by non-verbal and verbal encouragers. 6. I take notes if the information is detailed. 7. I acknowledge and empathize with the other person’s feelings. 8. I ask the other person to clarify if I am not certain about the message. 9. I paraphrase what I have heard to confirm my understanding. 10. I summarize what I heard and the actions we will take at the end of the conversation.
