Assessing/addressing the knee complex...living bones move around - TopicsExpress

Assessing/addressing the knee complex...living bones move around complex helical axes; it is unlikely (as commonly told) that they compress each other during movement (bone-on-bone). Because the amount of force produced by individual muscles varies depending on many factors (length, load, joint angle, etc.) they must be part of a much more complex movement system (see book Biotensegrity). From an application perspective, assess/address the COMPLEX even if you focus on regions (not isolated structures). In this quick clip, I grasp the clients knee complex while passively assessing the connective tissue tension while muscles are RELAXED, searching for ZONES that exhibit aberrant connective tissue tension. Healthy connective tissue has a supple, spring like quality and exhibits healthy translation. When abnormal zones are detected, an additional way to test the health (or lack of), is to ask the client to contract isometrically into your barrier to test force production ability. This test is also a great technique to enhance circulation to the knee region! Enjoy!
