Assigned Seating vs. Open Seating: Food for Thought Both are - TopicsExpress

Assigned Seating vs. Open Seating: Food for Thought Both are popular choices, but here are some things to think about...Generally assigning seats is the more "formal" choice, however some clients prefer a more laid-back vibe and want their guests to sit with whomever they choose. Either way, here are some tips: 1) If you do not assign seats, then you run the risk of people using all but 1 of the seats a table, therefore you MUST have more seats than people (add 5-10% more chairs than guests) 2) If you have a guest that doesnt know anyone else at the wedding, choosing a group of people to sit with could make him/her feel awkward 3) If you had guests pre-select an entree for dinner, you must assign seats because that is how the caterer will know who ordered what. The only way to avoid this scenario is to indicate entree on an escort card and make sure the guest puts it in front of them when they are seated. 4) If you assign seats, then you can put people together that have interests in common, or reconnect old friends. It can be a great thing! 5) If you still are unsure of what to do, meet in the middle... assign tables, but not specific seats. This will give your guests some freedom but will still be organized.
