Assistant Manager Jack Theakston’s Oscar Picks: Best Picture: Admittedly, I didn’t see all of the Best Picture noms (remember when there were only five?), but my favorite of the bunch was the one that hasn’t been getting much hype—Spike Jonze’s HER. It’s his best work since BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. My guess is DALLAS BUYER’S CLUB will be the winner, though. Best Male Lead: It’s a toss-up between McConaughey and Dern for me. My guess is Dern will win it, seeing as the Oscars love to give them to old-timers who never got them in their heyday. I like DiCaprio, but the Academy has no love for him, and he was just OK in WOLF. Best Female Lead: Only saw two of the noms for this (AMERICAN HUSTLE and GRAVITY), and didn’t think Adams or Bullock were anything special—Sandra Bullock is particularly awful and is only the darling of the Academy because she “plays the game.” Best Director: My preference is for Alexander Payne, who has turned out some really excellent work, and NEBRASKA is no exception. Finally, I’m throwing in my champion category, Cinematography. What you see and how it’s shot is one of the most important parts of a film, and so many of the cinematography noms were lackluster, EXCEPT for THE GRANDMASTER, which was MASTERFULLY (pardon the pun) shot. This Hong Kong movie hasn’t been seen by most people I know, but it’s a first rate picture that comes highly recommended.
