Video footage shows the sharply-dressed have- a-go-hero leap piggyback style on the raiders back. However, he backed away when the alleged thief terrifyingly pulled out a two-foot long machete knife from his trousers and brandished it over his head. The shocking incident took place at around 2.30pm yesterday, outside the luxury Carr Watches and Diamonds store near the capitals Liverpool Street Station. The store has since reopened today. The alleged raider pulled a machete knife from his trousers An eyewitness, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisals, said: I heard a loud thumping noise. At first I thought it was the builders working over the road. Then I looked at them and realised it couldnt be them as they were looking at me. Then I saw a guy in a motorbike helmet. He was strutting around outside next door and seemed to be protecting someone inside. I could not make out what was happening… it was so surreal. Then the man started running towards the main road. I saw the man run and jump on his back piggyback style. Then the man in the helmet pulled out a machete from somewhere, it just appeared. The man backed away and the other man ran off, possibly after his mates who left on scooters, though I didnt see them. I was frightened and wondering whether to stay put or escape. It all happened within five minutes. There are lots of undercover police officers here so it feels safe, its not an area where you expect things like this to happen. The City worker chased the man in the helmet Employees at the jewellers refused to confirm or deny who the hero was, saying they were leaving the matter to police. A friend of one staff member said they had told him they had seen the same men in helmets the day before. They must have been staking it out, he said. One man, who police believe was the man in the helmet, was followed and arrested in a car park in nearby Gravel Lane. City of London Police confirmed he has since been charged with with conspiracy to rob and threaten a person with a knife/bladed article in a public place and has been remanded in custody.
