Astrada powers Longfield to Rocky Mountain Open win The Aspen Valley Polo Club was the site of the opening game of the 2014 Rocky Mountain Open Championship Tuesday afternoon. Behind the talented 9-goaler Miguel Novillo Astrada (Miguel is rated at the maximum 10-goals in his native Argentina) Longfield (Hannah Buchan, Melissa Ganzi, Miguel Novillo Astrada and Juan Bollini) scored three goals in the final chukker to record a 10-9 win over La Karina (Brian Boyd, Carlitos Gracida, Santiago Wulff and Stewart Armstrong). All four first chukker goals were scored on penalty shots with Brian Boyd scoring the opener. Miguel Novillo Astrada scored the second for a 1-1tie. Boyds second goa of the game was countered by a period ending penalty conversion from Astrada, 2-2. Astrada opened the second period with another penalty goal, 3-2. Carlitos Gracida responded with a goal from the field for La Karina, 3-3. Melissa Ganzi closed out the scoring for the chukker with a goa=ahead goal for Longfield, 4-3. Defense was the key ingredient to third chukker play, with both teams turning aside scoring threats with backhanders and ride-offs. Astrada managed the only goal of the chukker to give Longfield a 5-3 halftime lead. A refocused La Karina team took the field in the fourth and promptly put two goals on the scoreboard (Gracida). Longfield was held to a single score by Astrada, but continued to lead, 6-5. La Karinas Santiago Wulff cam alive in the fifth period, scoring four goals and giving his team their first lead, 9-7, since the opening chukker. Once again, Astrada kept Longfield from getting shutout by scoring Longfields only goal f the chukker. Having their work cut out for them, Longfield went to work in the final chukker. Juan Bollini scored the first goal of the chukker, 9-8. Melissa GAnzi tied it at 9-9 with her second goal of the day, and while his teammates helped provide shutout defense, Astrada scored the final goal f the day for the 10-9 victory. Astrada led all sscoring with seven goals (three on penalty shots. Ganzi added two goals and Bollini scored once for the win. Wulff scored four times for La Karina. Gracida was credited with three goals and Boyd chipped in a pair of penalty goals in a losing effort.
