Astronaut hands Melbourne first softball loss The Astronaut High War Eagles are on a mission to prove that they’re the top softball team in Brevard County. They made a strong case Saturday with a 2-1 win at home against Melbourne. It was the Bulldogs’ first loss of the season. “Everybody was talking about Melbourne this and Melbourne that, but we wanted Astronaut to be the talk,” junior shortstop Kylie Young said. “And we wanted everybody to know that we’re here to go to state and we’re here to prove what we can do.” The win came at a crucial time for the War Eagles, who were coming off their first loss of the season, 14-6 against Cocoa Beach on Thursday. Heading into the contest, Astronaut was ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, while Melbourne was No. 5 in 7A. The War Eagles were led by the hot bat of Young, who drove in both runs. They were also led by quality pitching, thanks to sophomore Jaime Beth Simpson. “We couldn’t have done this without my teammates playing solid defense behind me,” Simpson said.
