Astronomers on hand for meteor shower viewing The night sky will be filled with light during a meteor shower this weekend and stargazers are invited to join University of Southern Queensland (USQ) astronomers for the show. The Geminids meteor shower (typically the best shower of the year in the Southern Hemisphere) can be annually observed between 4-17 December. The USQ Faculty of Health, Engineering and Sciences has invited locals to a free community event where astronomers will be on hand to provide a commentary on Sunday (December 14) evening. A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors (shooting stars) are observed to radiate, or originate, from one point in the night sky. The first Geminid meteors should be visible shortly after 9:30 and the frequency will increase as the night goes on. Media and community members are invited to attend a talk by Dr Jonti Horner under the evening sky from 8:30-9:30pm, followed by night sky viewing (weather permitting). What: Meteor Shower Community Event – Presentation by Dr Jonti Horner When: Sunday 14 December 2014, 8.30pm-late Where: USQ Astronomy viewing Dome, Off Baker Street, USQ Toowoomba RSVP: [email protected] or 07 4631 2361
