Astros mom here! A few days ago I promised that I would touch on the subject of BSL in the Huntington, WV area. But first, I want to touch on the subject of the term Pit Bull. First off - I am fairly certain that Astro isnt a pit bull. Why is his name Astro the Pit Bull then, you might ask. Well, that is because no matter what he is, people will always call him a pit bull. He will always be classified as that, and he will always be judged for it. Why? Simply because he is stocky with a big ol meat head. So, might as well go along with his stigma that is already there like so many other dogs are forced to do. Honestly, Astro is most likely a bull mastiff/boxer mix (my best guess). He may very well have some American Staffordshire terrier, American Pit Bull terrier, or one of the other bull terrier breeds but he is NOT a full blooded pit bull as so many people like to use that term. He is not a red nose, blue nose, gotti, razors edge, whatever other pit bull breed that you can make up. He is a dog. A big meat headed mixed breed dog that is a gentle giant. That is what he is. End rant. Onto the BSL issues in Huntington, WV. So, pit bull type dogs are not banned in Huntington. However, they are restricted (along with wolf hybrids). Being restricted means that you are allowed to have them, but they have to abide by crazy stupid rules that other dog parents dont have to deal with. I honestly could not tell you all of the restrictions, mainly because I will not live in Huntington because of them and I do not adopt bully breed dogs out within city limits. The rules that I do know are as follows: You must muzzle your dog at all times, you cannot have open windows in your home (for fear that your vicious pibble is going to jump out of windows to maul neighborhood kids), and your dog must not be free roaming (hey, how about we make that a rule for every breed so that we dont have dogs running the streets all the time?...), and you must register your dog as a pit bull (so that if they ever do pass a ban, which lets face it..if they passed a restriction they will eventually pass a ban...they know exactly where all of the vicious pit bulls live). Anywho, those are the main rules that I can think of off the top of my head. Also - what is classified as a Pit Bull? Anything with a stocky/muscular build and a blocky head or any dogs that animal control (or random ignorant people) deem as mean/vicious looking. You would be amazed at some of the dogs Ive seen labeled and passed off as pit bulls or pit mixes. I hope that this has answered some of the questions that were asked a few nights ago and I apologize for the late night post! By the way, here is an adorable video of my giant meat head dog son rolling around in the living room!
