At 1:09 p.m., Virginia State Police were called to the Smyth County Courthouse concerning the discovery of a suspicious letter that had arrived in the U.S. mail. The Virginia State Police Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Interdiction (CCI) Team has responded to recover, secure and analyze the letter and its contents. At this time, the courthouse has been closed to the public as a precautionary measure. No injuries have been reported. The incident is under investigation at this time, with the assistance of the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia Department of Emergency Management. Corinne N.
