At 11:02 this morning, Chaffee County dispatch received a phone call indicating there had been a rock slide at Agnes Vaille Falls, located on C.R. 162, Nathrop, Colorado. The caller stated there were 5-7 hikers that were caught in the rock slide. The first responders on scene are Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, Chaffee County Emergency Medical Services, Chaffee County Fire Protection District, Salida Fire Department, Buena Vista Fire Department, U.S Forest Service, and 3 Flight for Life helicopters. A Climax Mine engineer has been requested to assist in the rescue efforts. Sheriff Pete Palmer stated a 13 year old female was dug from the debris by Chaffee County Sheriffs Deputies and flown by Flight for Life to Children’s Hospital in Denver. Her condition is unknown at this time. There are still 5 hikers trapped in the debris area. “Names of the hikers are not being released at this time and further information will be provided as it becomes available” said Sheriff Palmer. The rock slide occurred approximately 1 mile above the trailhead and the area is unsafe. The road is closed at the intersection of County Road 162 and County Road 270 except to local traffic.
