At 1pm Ill be presenting certificates to some wonderful young environmentalists at Gasworks Creek in Keen St. Have a look at the before and after photos to see the difference EnviTE and Council have made. More details: Lismore City Council is holding a special ceremony in the lead up to World Environment Day to thank young EnviTE Employment work experience participants for their blood, sweat and tears helping to improve Lismore’s waterways. Council has recognised partnerships are the way to maximise resources and get things done in the community. A recent partnership with EnviTE Employment, which delivers the Jobs Services Australia contract, has demonstrated the value of this methodology. Council identifies natural stormwater treatment sites that need improvement and supplies native seedlings and mulch while EnviTE work experience teams get in and do the on-ground work. This includes weeding, mulching and revegetation of some natural stormwater treatment sites such as Gasworks Creek, Magellan Street and Nesbitt Park. Council’s Environmental Strategies Officer Anton Nguyen said the partnership with EnviTE Employment had enabled enormous amount of weeding, mulching and planting to be done, which would simply not be achievable if left to Council alone. “Chris Owen and his team have been absolutely amazing – not only are we treating polluted stormwater runoff from our urban catchments and beautifying our degraded waterways but we also have a whole crop of young people learning and developing new skills to assist with future employment opportunities,” Anton said. “This partnership has seen small amount of funding go a very long way and we all know with resources becoming more and more limited, we need to work smarter in the future to keep our environment healthy. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank EnviTE team for their hard work. It is a great example of people and organisations working together to improve the local environment, which is what World Environment Day is all about.” Anton said the Gasworks site is an excellent example of water sensitive urban design, with a stormwater treatment train incorporating gross pollutant traps and natural vegetation systems. This treats polluted stormwater runoff from Ballina Road and Girards Hill, returning clean water to Wilsons River via Gasworks Creek.
