At 2:41 a.m. EST, most would be asleep. However, at this time on January 20, 1996, the Space Shuttle Endeavour landed at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida – returning after just under nine days in space. This smooth mission was the first Shuttle flight of 1996, featuring two space walks, the retrieval of a Japanese satellite after a successful 10-month mission, and several scientific research tests. These tests included experiments measuring GPS technology in space and radio communications. The STS-72 crew was commanded by Brian Duffy, with pilot Brent W. Jett, mission specialists Leroy Chiao, Daniel T. Barry, Winston E. Scott and Koichi Wakata. A detailed report of the launch, mission, and specific tasks of the crew members can be found at: nasa.gov/…/…/shuttlemissions/archives/sts-72.html
