At 5:26pm the Ledyard Fire Company and Gales Ferry Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched to Lantern Hill, in the area of the former Silica Mine located off Lantern Hill Road for the report of a hiker who has sustained serious injuries after a fall from a cliff. Units were met on the street by one of the hikers friends who led responders in to the scene. The area was remote, terrain was steep and loose rocks and unstable ground required extensive manpower and equipment to reach and remove the patient. Ledyard Ambulance, North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company and Mashantucket FD all participated in the rescue. Using rigging, anchors, ropes, a rescue basket and an ATV, units were able to remove the patient in about an hour. The patient was transferred to the awaiting LIFE STAR helicopter and flown to Hartford Hospital.
