At 5/5+! were not impressed with poetry thats more “political,” “philosophical,” or “religio-spiritual” than it is rooted in palpable, “in the moment” human experience. We don’t say poetry we like shouldn’t have this kind of content, just that if we have to agree with a poem’s politics, “cause,” philosophy or spirituality to think it’s good, we’re unlikely to think it is. …is so filled with “now” cultural references it’ll take three footnotes per line to be understood five years from now, when the culture and references will all have changed… Is rife with cliches and/or trite, hackneyed phrases. These things can usually take our minds and senses only where we’ve been countless times before and show us nothing distinctive. Exception is work that uses common phrases and thoughts ironically, turns them upside down and/or shows their absurdity or vacuity.
