At 6:00 a.m. this morning, the Tucson Police Department began using the region-wide, Pima County Wireless Integrated Network, known as the PCWIN radio system. Our previous radio system has been of good service to us over the last 36 years. It has memorialized the last call for Officer’s James Smith, Jeffrey Ross, Patrick Hardesty and Erik Hite. It has also served us during community changing events such as the mass shooting at the College of Nursing and the tragic events that occurred on January 8, 2011. Emerging from each of these events was the challenge of not being able to communicate well with the varying agencies, within the Tucson metropolitan area. The new system will allow us to communicate with one another all on the same frequency. This broadened communication system will allow us to join frequencies with the Tucson Fire Department and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as well. Previously the local agencies used different systems, which made it difficult to communicate and coordinate collaborative efforts in situations that necessitated a city wide response. Today’s transition marks the end of one era and the beginning of a new chapter in interoperable communications, that will ultimately improve the safety of the first responders and the community we serve.
