At 99-years-young, Helene Young rode 12 miles on her bike, benefiting student scholarships, at the sixth annual G. Larry James Legacy Fund Bike Ride on Saturday. The avid cyclist who proudly pedals her $5 yard sale bike, rides regularly “to commune with nature” and to clean up roadside litter. Young is advocating for her sister, known as the Peace Pilgrim, to be included in the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Peace Pilgrim, born in Egg Harbor City, spent 28 years walking across the U.S., speaking frequently at churches, schools and on radio and TV before her death in 1981.
