At Knock Airport - I returned the hire car and pointed out to the lad who checked it over that there was a circular mark round the decal on the bonnet that was down to the metal and was there when I took the car out. It wasnt on the inventory but I certainly didnt want charging for it. Ah he said We wouldnt class that as a mark since its neither a dint nor a scrape. Would it be a gouge do you think? I offered. That would cover it. He said. But were only bothered about dints and scrapes. I love that. An element of thinking that goes beyond the obvious. No wonder so many Irish millionaires in Manchester came from Mayo. They dont think outside the box - they dont even recognise the existence of a box. Good on em. It reminds me of years back when I took over four stone walls, a rotten corrugated iron roof and forty tons of sheep shit in Connemara and turned it back into a house. All I needed when the builders had gone was the electric. Things were proving difficult to impossible until I had a word with a leprechaun I met in Cardinal Newmans Holy Guinness Well and crossed his palm with a small changeling Lo and behold a rainbow appeared over the house and next day there was more electric than you could shake a stick at. The same happened with the phone leprechaun and the water pookha. Ah them was the days. Feck the begrudgers and feck all dints and scapes as long as theyre gouges.
