At SBW Warriors we are fortunate enough to have a skilled HS Coach - TopicsExpress

At SBW Warriors we are fortunate enough to have a skilled HS Coach at our club - here is a very good read - especially for all our girl players and parents: Anyone who has coached girl’s high school sports knows about girls knee problems. One knee problem in particular is ACL tears. This is a problem that I have witnessed to many times first hand. In my 16 years of being a varsity boys and girls soccer coach, people ask me the biggest difference in coaching. I have always come up with one or two differences but for the most part, they are the same. I was listening to a radio program last weekend and they had a spokesman from the website kneesforlife.org. The topic was ACL tears and prevention. As I listened, I thought back on my years of coaching and realized something shocking. In the 16 years I was coaching the boys, my players had 0 ACL tears. In that same time, the girls had 17 ACL tears. 17!!! And every single was non-contact. One year, the Libertyville girls’ varsity team had 7 tears in one season. This is from the website, kneesforlife.org It has a lot of information but I wanted to share this with you. ”Studies show that teenage female athletes are at higher risk of ACL injuries than teenage male athletes. Young women athletes are anywhere from two to 10 times more at risk of an ACL tear because of differences in biomechanics and body shape. Female hormones can also cause an increased looseness in ligaments, making girls more vulnerable to tears. Obviously, I do not want anything to happen to any of the girls. Knees for Life sent me a bag tag for all the girls and I will pass them out tonight and next week. On it, it has exercises to do to help prevent ACL tears. I highly recommend looking at this and encouraging your daughters to start doing them. I have had friends, cousins, and former players tear their ACL and the surgery and rehab is painful. I would hate to see anyone I know have to go through this. I figure if I have information to possibly prevent this, I would pass it on to you. Thanks Coach Pete
