At Sam Simons birthday yesterday Sam said that the last year has been the best one of his life. Hes dying of cancer and refocussed much of the last year of his life to making the lives of other animals better. Friends who have known him much longer than I have said they have never seen him so happy. Many of the animal rights luminaries of our generation were at his birthday celebration. I think The Simpsons is one of the best written shows on television and the writers told me that Sam defined the sensibility of the characters. They acknowledged their success to Sam and they were also there as well to celebrate his life on another level. He showed us all so much love and grace on how to live in the moment that he will be a beacon for me on how to live for tomorrow. After his diagnosis his doctors gave him only a few months to live but 19 months later hes still with us. Okay, Im feeling my mortality. It takes me five years on average for me to make film with my crew - At this rate I have few more left in me - my wifes father is dying - and Sam isnt feeling so well - its natural to look around and think seriously about whats important. I want you all to know Im on it. I appreciate you that you have been on the journey with me because after all - its our journey. Were on a mission to retool the American Dream so that our success, the way humans succeed on this planet also takes into consideration the health of the planet and the well being of creatures we share the journey of the miracle of existence.
