At TGAA I got to spend some time with and have several good conversations with George Lehr (associate producer on UNCLE), who is a great, down to earth guy. I also finally got to meet Richard Conroy in person. I have talked with him many times by phone and email. He was with the team that developed the UNCLE gun for Ideal Toy. And as I understand it, it was Ideal’s toy UNCLE gun design that was the starting point for the gun used on the series, not the other way around. (The contract with Ideal to make toys based on the show was an early money maker for the show’s owners. A unique gun, and the concept developed by the company Conroy worked for, was one of the things the toy end of the promotion came up with.) Something Bob Short told me (relatively) recently is that the gun used on the show had a bipod, (which was never used), which means that Ideal didn’t just arbitrarily add a bipod to their UNCLE gun. The show decided not to use that item that Ideal had as part of the gun’s design. I also met Joseph Sargent, who directed 11 episodes on UNCLE. He was driving around a motorized cart and wearing one of those clear plastic tubes that helps put more oxygen in the nose. As he was passing the tables that held my display of guns he got a big grin on his face and stopped to look. I asked if he would pose with one and he was very happy to.
