At The Parent Practice, we love rules and routines. We believe that children need boundaries and parameters to keep them safe and teach them lessons for life. A consistent structure gives them space to explore within limits. Children don’t need to keep testing boundaries when they feel secure. A safe, secure and predictable environment provides the best conditions in which to bring up children with good self-esteem. The great news is that you most likely already have lots of rules that your children are already following. If something isnt working consistently (mornings, mealtimes, screens ... ) consider that a rule may be missing. Spend some time speaking with your children to come up with a clear rule ... and remember that when they follow the rule, to consistently let them know that you have spotted it! See it ... say it.
