At Vegas dynamic 5/5+! poetry reading-workshop joining, we prove that to be tough doesnt mean you dont care. We care that you and your work dont get just false praise, smiles and strokes that never really let you know whether or not, why or why not your works good or getting better. Your poetry MATTERS first and foremost at 5/5+! Read how some folks whove come say 5/5+! means to them: Poet/Performance Artist Deneen Sutton: Loving, respectful, and considerate feedback, which I have found to spark a desire to really take my poetry to a higher level, to take it more seriously. No need to feel anxious about the experience. Many, many thanks for the invitation to safely lay my heart at your feet and have it safely returned unharmed....with the constructive persuasions and suggestions to strengthen its muscle, allow the blood to flow through each chamber and supply the outer reaches of my anatomy with improved perfusion. For those who doubt, for those who wonder: Dont ! Im open. Are you? Poet Brigette Thomas-Boucaud: I enjoyed my first taste of 5/5+! I find it to be refreshing, different yet satisfying my poets craving and cant wait until our next meeting, Nick & Lana, thanks again for the invite! Poet-historian James McManmon: Do whatever you can to be with these people. They will make you feel like they really care about you and treasure your talents, while inspiring you to reach deep within, as you discover more clearly how you can express your own unique voice. Youll be amazed how well 5/5+! and its people practice Abraham Lincolns advice: Let those criticize who have hearts willing to help. Much-published poet/poets’ mentor Lee Mallory: “Certainly the big success you said it would be. The workshop was structured for maximum benefit, the commentaries were insightful, and we all profited from the feedback. The prospect of more reading/workshop hybrids like yours sounds so bright! In fact, wouldnt it be great if there were five or 10 5/5+!s, each feeding into an open reading group of participating poets? Just think how that would improve the quality of the works presented! We’d be seeing a lot less drivel trying to masquerade as poetry. You can be really proud of this very focused gathering. I’ll try to come every time you meet.” Gary Ashman, published poet, attorney: “Kudos to 5/5 on an excellent launch: A free-standing, non-chain bookstore (remember those?) as host. No whirring cappucino machines or sandwiches micro-waving, no one ‘orthodox’ way of writing poetry imposed, a mature nurturing environment that welcomes a broad spectrum of talent. This is a solid group of accomplished writers offering respectful, incisive critiques of each other’s work in a reading/workshop hybrid format. If you’re serious about exposing your work to people who care about good work, you have to be at 5/5+!” Author-editor-poet Carrie Ann Lahain: At 5/5+! I appreciated the supportive atmosphere and the thoughtful critical response offered by those participating – true constructive criticism, lots of quality poems and quality feedback. I love how civil we were even in our disagreements. I appreciate the democratic format – newbie or old guard, we all got our 5/5! I was so grateful that right after the event I ran home and pulled a volume of Mary Oliver off my office bookshelf. I wanted more poetry.” Bret Breeze, poet, musician, former Las Vegas slam champ: Yes, [5/5+!] was everything Nick and Lana built it up to be. I was very pleased to have the opportunity to attend. Author-poet Helen Havlin OReilly: Enjoyed the meeting and the people and the poetry. It and they exemplified the lost art of disagreeing without becoming disagreeable. Now, come yourself -- and find out how much your poetry matters here, and why! Today, 3/15, 3-5 p.m., Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, MD. Pkwy. across from UNLV.
