At WOMEX10, we presented the WOMEX Artist Award to Danyèl Waro (La Réunion). Waro led the revival of maloya music and, along with it, the Creole language and culture. Maloya has its routes in East African and Malagasy music with influences from Arabic and Indian cultures, but to Western ears, it sounds remarkably bluesy. Waro is the master of maloya, and that can be seen in todays video – his voice is soulful and at once powerful yet extremely fragile, and the harmonies from his band are perfect and serve only to enhance the emotion of the piece. The performance here is of a piece entitled Mandela and was recorded at the 2012 Afrikafestival in Hertme. A very deserved award winner. #20YearsofWOMEX
