At a Senate Finance Committee hearing on May 6, Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) railed against Senators who oppose an increase in the federal tax on gasoline, saying, “It’s an American characteristic that you don’t do anything which displeases the voters, because you always have to get reelected here. I understand part of it. It has to do with—for some, it’s just we don’t want anything good to happen under [Obama], because he’s the wrong color.” (In Rockefeller’s view, it is apparently racist to not want to increase the cost of gasoline for consumers. He may not be aware that black people also buy gasoline; perhaps he thinks all the servants in his mansion take public transportation.)
