At a University that revolves around tradition there is none greater, or more impactful than Silver Taps. The Aggie Core values of respect and loyalty are on prominent display. Thousands of Aggies stand in silence, put their phones away, and honor the life of fellow students that most in attendance didnt know. The mother of a student being honored once said to me, I was brought to tears knowing that thousands of college students stayed off their phone and refused to talk just to honor my son. A man that most of those in attendance didnt know. Thats what Silver Taps and the Spirit of Aggieland are all about. Honoring the fallen while bringing comfort to families going through the most difficult and traumatic thing theyve ever experienced. Last year a record was set by delivering 700 letters to the families. Quite frankly, I think thats unacceptable and I know we can do better. At a school of 58,000 that means about 0.01% of students wrote a letter. Its a simple act that will take no more than five minutes, but will result in tremendous impact. Throughout the day I encourage everyone reading this to grab one other person, stop by a table, and write a letter to the families. Finally, make it your priority to be in Academic Plaza at 10:30 PM. Its the second week of school, and as far as Im concerned theres no good excuse to miss. If the tables were turned, and it was your family sitting in Academic Plaza what would you want the scene to be? Would your mom think Im too tired or I live off campus or I should study are good excuses? I know my mom wouldnt. I hope each of you realize how important this hallowed tradition is, and do everything you can to be there. See you tonight.
