At a function last night I had a person ask me for the original - TopicsExpress

At a function last night I had a person ask me for the original recording of Son of a Preacher Man and I naturally said Dusty Springfields 1968 recording and he said no, Aretha Franklin and of course he was wrong but I thought I would put the facts of the matter on this page. The song was written by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins and Aretha was offered the chance to record it first but she declined. It was subsequently recorded by Dusty on her debut album for Atlantic Records Dusty in Memphis which was produced by Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd & Arif Mardin. On hearing the song, Arethas older sister, Erma Franklin, decided to record it for her 1969 Brunswick release Soul Sister . At this point Aretha reconsidered the song and recorder on her 1970 LP This Girls in Love with You which was her 17th studio album. As a foot note to the story Aretha opened up the release with Son of a Preacher Man which eventually was issued a B side to Call Me which had a great backing from the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, however at track 4 on side one was the song Let it Be which she released before the Beatles version so you win some and lose some but with a career like Arethas, who really worries about these things....... only people like us at the PERTH ROCK N ROLL RECORD COLLECTORS CLUB. https://youtube/watch?v=FZRbTaG3xIw
