At a time of increasing government oversight of many sectors of Chinese society, the [Chinese] government has said it will take on the burden of purifying the work of its journalists lest the country slip into a bog of evil winds and noxious influences. Similar to its efforts to combat environmental pollution, the [News Morality] committee will foster awareness of the news smog problem and increase a sense of self-discipline within the media, [the Peoples Daily editorial] said. ... How to clean up the souls of journalists then, the editorial concludes, will be up to the News Morality Committee’s smog-free vision of the news, of the news-reading public and of the soulless media people.
