This was the first of many military regimes to mar Pakistan’s history. With this step, the Constitution of 1956 was abrogated, ministers were dismissed, Central and Provincial Assemblies were dissolved and all political activities were banned. General Muhammad Ayub Khan, the then Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, became the Chief Martial Law Administrator. The parliamentary system in Pakistan came to end. Within three weeks of assuming charge on October 27, 1958, Iskander Mirza was ousted by General Ayub Khan, who then declared himself President bringing the drama to its course. I salute President Ayub Khan and his one unit that brought the nation together!!! What a role model. A harbinger of democracy, independant land of pure with no foreign influence, the growth and development of economy. The interests of the country and its nation were the core at his heart. No corruption, no nepotism! Zinda bad. We desperately need leaders like him and Zia ul Haq. Our saviors. But he wanted2/3rd majority. Rigging did take place . Jan Mohd Abassi and khwaja Khairuddin were abducted. They could not even file nomination papers. It left out so much, even though we are leaning on it today, it is very much a flawed document. It makes no changes in the way the police act should be modernised. The judicial shenanigans are allowed because there are no provisions to deal with these shenanigans. Provinces had no powers until recent amendments, deliberately keeping the centre all powerful. Like I said, it may be a crutch at the moment, but only because we as a nation have failed ourselves. A much more robust and thorough review need to be done, and an new constitution written.
