At around 4:30 PM on July 2, 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg, the Texans of Hoods Brigade (4th and 5th Texas Infantry Regiment) began their assault up Little Round Top. While the First Texas Infantry Regiment along with the Third Arkansas Infantry Regiment veered left to assault The Devils Den at the base of the Round Tops, the Fourth and Fifth Texas along with regiments from General Evander Laws Alabama Brigade made multiple assaults to drive Union Regiments off of the small hills. While the First Texas Infantry and Third Arkansas Infantry Regiments were successful in taking the Devils Den, the Fourth and Fifth Texas and the Alabama Regiments were unsuccessful in capturing the Round Tops. Both Union and Confederate Regiments during this engagement suffered numerous casualties and it truly was the Valley of the Shadow of Death. The photo is a modern day photo of Little Round Top that faced the Texas and Alabama Regiments as they charged up Little Round Top on that hot and bloody afternoon of July 2, 1863.
