At finding myself looking at demotivational posters somehow itself following on from some game of thrones research, I was linked to videos explaining everything I need to know about the World Cup which I am informed is currently ongoing. youtube/watch?v=Ioyt2zzm530 youtube/watch?v=uVim7rjfKOQ youtube/watch?v=ypwpf-fhPoI think Ive got all I need to know now. Basically, in a very similar way to the G8 summit, each country sends high salaried individuals representing the best they have to offer in poor acting and underhanded tactics to compete for some relatively immaterial boon considering the value of the event itself and the cost of attending. Realistically, would it be that hard for each country to just go out and buy cups for every team? Even every player? Thus saving weeks of unnecessary flights, massive disruption to transport and utilities, collossal clean-up costs, the embarrassment of each losing team, the apparent difficulties vicariously affecting the countrys citizens who get a little too wrapped up in proceedings, disruptions to televisual entertainment of those not interested in watching, the massive marketing campaigns which preceed and pervade the duration of the event, the civil unrest caused by celebrations when a particular team wins/doesnt, the additional cost to healthcare services as a result, the additional strain on emergency services, the huge hike in fuel consumption both vehicular and grid, etc, etc, for something which is inevitably won every year with the same massive anticlimax and sense that people have just missed several weeks of their lives they could have been out doing other things... maybe even playing football...
