At first, Rodgers & Hammerstein only asked Jerome Robbins to choreograph the “Small House of Uncle Thomas” ballet in THE KING AND I. (They couldnt picture other dancing in the show.) But Robbins had been inspired by Southeast Asian dancing, and decided that the number should be “like a polished jewel, delicately performed and intimately done” rather than a large-scale production number. He then asked to stage more movement sequences in the musical - and the result was this carefully choreographed entrance for the royal children!
